Installation of CMacTeX2.2
The installation of CMacTeX2.2 is not that difficult. All of the files
have been compacted with Compact Pro, written by Bill Goodman.
They will unpack to 7 megabytes automatically when they are opened.
(If Gatekeeper or some other Virus checker is installed on your Macintosh,
disable it before unpacking the files.
After you have downloaded the files you want, run them through
any program that utilizes BinHex4.0 in order to convert the .hqx files.
Unpack the files and place them anywhere on your hard drive. In order
to help users who are not familiar with TeX I will explain the setup I use.
My hard disk drive is called "Apollo" and I created a folder to contain all
of the TeX files. I named this folder "TeX Folder." Inside this folder I placed
all of the applications in CMacTeX: smallinitex, biginitex, smalltex, bigtex,
smallinimf, biginimf, smallmf, bigmf, dvips, dvipreview, and PrintPS.
All of the utility programs (afm2tfm, gftopk, pktogf, etc.) were put in
a subfolder of the main tex folder called "Utilities." All of the support files
for TeX were placed in six subfolders of the main tex folder, namely
"texfonts", "texformats", "texinputs", "mfinputs", "mfbases", and "ps".
Each of these subfolders contain very different types of files.
The "texfonts" folder contains all of the font files needed by any of the
programs. The TeX font metric (.tfm) files are placed in a subfolder of
"texfonts" called "tfms". The Postscript font metric files are placed in
a separate subfolder of "texfonts" called "PStfms". All of the pk files are
placed in another subfolder of "texfonts" called "pks". Finally the Postscript
virtual font files (.vf) are placed in yet another subfolder of "texfonts" called
"PSvfs". Hence the "texfonts" folder contains four subfolders and all font files
are distributed among these subfolders by type.
The "texformats" subfolder of the main tex folder contains the file "tex.pool"
and all format files (.fmt) created by initex.
The "texinputs" subfolder contains all the macro (.tex, .sty, etc.) files needed
by TeX.
The "mfinputs" subfolder contains all the .mf files Metafont needs to build
.tfm and .pk files. Any file with a .mf extension should be in this folder.
The "mfbases" subfolder contains the file "mf.pool" and all base (.base) files
created by inimf.
Finally, the "ps" subfolder contains the config and .pro files needed by dvips.
All of these folders may be renamed, split up, or recombined in any
fashion. The only restriction in naming these files and folders is
that no file or folder name may contain either a slash ('/'), a
colon (':'), or an asterisk(*).
After you have decided where to place all these files you must edit three files:
"texmf.env", "dvips.env", and "dvipreview.env."
These are ordinary ascii files and can be edited with any word
processor, including TeachText. These files contain the definitions
of the environment variables used by the programs in CMacTeX2.2.
These environment variables define the paths that all the programs
will use to locate tfm files, macros, formats, pk files, etc. The
paths must be defined with care and follow the format given in
the files themselves. Dvips and TeX use different conventions for
indicating subdirectory searching and for this reason there are two
files defining the paths. The file "dvips.env" is used by dvips, dvipreview.env
by dvipreview, while all of the remaining programs read "texmf.env."
This results in some duplication between the two files. If later you
move some files, you will have to edit these files to reflect your
changes. After you have set these environment variables, place them
in the Preferences folder inside your System Folder.
If you copied my setup above, all you should have to do to edit these
files is replaced the word "Apollo" with the name of your hard disk
drive. All of the .env files contain other entries you can use to set
specific features of the programs.
In addition to ".env" files, there is a third file, "tex.config" which also
should be placed in your Preferences folder inside your System Folder.
This is a simple resource file used by the various programs of CMacTeX2.2
to communicate with each other. There is nothing in this file that
you should change manually. When TeX produces a dvi file, this file
is recorded in "tex.config." When dvips or dvipreview is opened, this
file will appear under the File menu. You can simply select it for
further processing without having to go through a file dialog to locate
it. The same type of communication also occurs between dvips and
PrintPS. Also "tex.config" records the current tex format, so that
it will be automatically selected the next time TeX is opened.
